"I’ve Been There": A 10 Step Guide To Help Men Cope with Their Hair Loss

For many men, the first signs of losing their hair can be a devastating blow to their confidence and self esteem. Some feel it is the beginning of the end. Many men feel that their hair is tied directly to their youth and their ability to be seen as desirable to a mate.

The media mostly offers up images of men with full heads of hair, so it’s very difficult for the hair challenged to see good representation of themselves on television and in magazines. It’s little wonder that men can enter into a state of desperation or depression, throwing a lot of money into many different snake oils.
As I state on my website, I began to lose my hair at the age of twenty. The only thing available at the time was prescription Rogaine. My own moment of enlightenment came when I realized that DHT was the key hormone of the whole cascade of events that cause us to lose our hair. I was lucky enough have the resources to then take matters into my own hands and create my own personal hair loss solution. I’m not asking you to do the same. I am asking you to take a step back and know that you’re not dealing with life and death here. Relax and take the time now to reevaluate your situation so that you can deal better with what you are going through.

I’ve created a 10 step guide below for men who are trying to come to terms with their hair loss.

1) Understand first that it is only hair and no person can be defined by their hair only. You are not your hair in other words.

2) Know that the sooner you address the issue, the easier it will be to get back what hair you’re losing. Don’t make rushed or rash decisions out of desperation. Educate yourself and make smart decisions based on your newfound options.

3) If you’re beyond three years of having lost hair, most likely you won’t be able to revive the hair follicle. There are other options like hair transplants provided you have a good amount of donor hair from the back and sides of your scalp. If you lack the donor hair, give science a few years and hair follicle cloning could one day be available to you. Until then, modern hair “systems” or pieces have come a long way and can be worn virtually undetectable also as an alternative.

4) Look for your own sources of inspiration in entertainment or the media. There are a growing number of male public figures that have decided to proudly embrace their baldness and make bald look beautiful.

5) Compartmentalize your life and self image issues. Being bald is only one area of your life. Don’t let it affect all other areas of your life. Go out and still plan to conquer the world, because being bald has nothing to do with your ability to function effectively as a person.

6) Appearance can be a like a credit score. If you feel you lack in one area, you can make up for it in others. You can work out and have more muscle tone as your own way of compensating for what you consider yourself lacking in hair loss.
7) Learn to not take yourself so seriously. If people make a bald joke in your presence, be the first to laugh.

8) Use the internet for support. Look at groups of guys who are going through the same thing or who have been there. Read what they have to say. It could help just knowing that you’re certainly not alone. You never know when you’ll hear or read that one comment that changes everything for you.

9) People will most likely treat your baldness the way you decide it should be treated. Wear it proudly and people will treat you like it’s something of an asset for you and not your liability.

10) Use perspective and acknowledge that are much bigger problems in the world that need to be tackled than losing your hair. When you turn your attention outward, you have the potential to grow beyond your own vanity issues.

Losing you hair doesn’t mean that you are losing you health. Having your health in life is one of the most important things. Health enables us to go out and stay connected in the world so we can make a difference. Your hair may come and go or be long gone, but you’re still here and that’s what matters most.
