There are differences in how hair loss appears in women vs. men. Early signs of hair loss in women can manifest as a widening of the part or an overall thinning before hair loss progresses to balding on the top of the head. 95 percent of thinning hair in women is the result of female pattern baldness; though relatively rare, there are other causes as well.
More than 90 percent of hair loss cases in women are due to female pattern baldness. Excessive, ongoing pulling of the hair can result in traction alopecia. Most frequently seen in women who braid their hair, this constant stress causes permanent scarring of the hair follicle that prevents hair from regrowing.
